3A- Your Entrepreneurship Story
Throughout my entire extended family, I am one of the
youngest. Having such a large age gap between my extended family members has
allowed me to look up to them and view them as mentors. One of my cousins, who
is about 17 years older than me is a contractor for the military but likes to
say he has a “side job.”
His “side job” consists of buying homes, gutting them out,
renovating them, and then renting them out. These homes are not the typical
home. He designs them so that multiple families can live in them. To be clearer,
he will take a rather large home divide it into about four units and rent to
four different tenants. Each tenant has their own entrance and amenities. Each
unit consists of a good size kitchen, dining area, family room, anywhere from
2-3 bedrooms, and 1-2 baths.
He has developed over
10 of these properties. They are all within 5 miles of each other in an area
that young adults and new families seem to be attracted to (South Tampa). His
choice of location was perfect because ample young adults are drawn towards
this area due to the lifestyle it has to offer. Various events take place
throughout the year here, it is a 3-minute walk from the bay, a 4-minute drive
to downtown, and surrounded by plenty of places to eat and shop.
My cousin shared with me that he developed these properties
because he has a love for designing homes, but he also aspires to retire early.
He stated that if he were to stop working for the military and continue
developing these properties, he would have a super flexible schedule. He is
considering doing this sooner than later because he has two children between
the ages of 1 and 4 and one other child on the way. The aspect of flexibility
that entrepreneurship allows is what most intrigues me. I believe a balance
between work and family is very crucial and is what will make me feel most
fulfilled. It is motivating to have a cousin who has similar values to me.
I enrolled in ENT3003 in order to expand my knowledge on the
life of entrepreneurs and the steps they take to their journey of becoming an
entrepreneur. Mostly, I was interested in joining a class that allows me to
focus on the experiences of people and creating my own experiences rather than
learning more formulas and putting them to work through an exam.
Hi Brianna. I always found home renovation interesting. I personally love how you can make a house seem like a completely different one just by redecorating and repainting it. I am also drawn to entrepreneurship because of the flexibility it offers, as well as the independence. I joined this course for a reason similar to yours. I simply want to learn as much as I can about the journey of an entrepreneur.

ReplyDeleteI really liked your post, I thought it was cool that a member of your family was an entrepreneur and could show you firsthand what that entails. I also have people in my family that own, refurbish, and rent out houses, but I never really thought of them as entrepreneurs. Having taken this course, however, I now see that they observed a need and solved the issue, which is the root of entrepreneurship. Great post!
Hey Brianna, I really love reading this post! I actually have always wanted to do something similar to this but I have never thought about buying a big property to divide it into different homes. It could be something I can possibly look into in the future. This is like one of the reasons I enjoy joining a class like this as we get to met everyone's ideas that could change our lives.
